Golden try decides Semi….It was the biggest Tag Blitz to date by Martin O’Donnell

Saturday 4th September saw the 4th RA tag Rugby Blitz. This was held at the now familiar venue on the heath opposite the Princess of Wales pub in Blackheath.
Weather was perfect for tag. A sunny day with temperatures in the mid 20’s
and turnout was again impressive, with 10 teams competing for the trophy. The tournament was played across two pitches and organised around a two league structure with the top two teams from each league progressing to a semi-final. Both semi-finals were keenly contested with one going to a golden try.
The final featured Wooden Spoon who are one of our preferred charities and who have competed in the tournament from the very beginning. The other finalists were Grubber Lang, a team with lots of experience and a familiar name on the tag rugby circuit in South East London. Grubber Lang’s experience told in the end and they ran out comfortable winners by a score of 6 to 3.

What is noticeable is that the standard of play has improved as tag becomes more established. This has resulted in an improvement in fair play with most of the games now being played in a friendly and sporting manner. Grubber Lang were a great example to everyone and played their games in the true spirit of tag.
Most of those who turn up on the day may not appreciate the organisation and planning that goes into a tournament like this. Kudos to all those who worked quietly in the background in the lead up to and during the event. The tournament was once again a resounding success and this is in no small measure down to the effort of these volunteers. The day ran like clockwork and it was heartening to overhear a conversation between one group of competitors who praised the organisation around the event.

While the tournament is all about tag we don’t miss the opportunity to raise cash for some very deserving charitable causes. Once again a very worthwhile sum was raised and this will go to our nominated charity wooden spoon.
So once again a highly successful tournament followed by a chance to relive the memories in the Princess of Wales afterwards. Can’t wait for next year. The Blitz just gets bigger and better.

Feedback from participants:

“It was a wonderful event, organised very nicely and even better that it was for a special cause. Was an absolute pleasure for us.”

“It was a well organised competition, everyone was very friendly.”
