Royal Arsenal Spring League ’18 Entry Match Report – (Wed Mar 21st)

Match report Royal Arsenal vs Brobdingnagian Jugs

Royal Arsenal were on an upward curve on their way into Wednesday’s game against Brobdingnagian Jugs having narrowly lost the first game of the season and drawn the second with some much-improved performances.

And confidence was high for the Arsenal ahead of the game as they named a strong line-up for the 8.15pm kickoff.

Unfortunately things got off to a bad start for Royal Arsenal as they conceded a try early on followed by the oft-crippled Joel (yours truly) conceding a pair of penalties for spinning into tacklers on kickoff returns.

The first half went from bad to worse as Arsenal gave up a pair of try’s to the Jugs’ female members after some sloppy tagging (again, yours truly) leaving the side with a lot of ground to make up in the second period.

But buoyed by a rousing half-time team talk from inspirational captain Kyle, Arsenal went into the second half with a fresh attitude and a rock solid defense, conceding just (One point? Or was it two? I don’t remember!) in the whole second period.

A combination of some outstanding burst from Blair who torched the Jugs’ defense with a full-pitch scamper, and a pair of tries for the ever-evasive Kyle, meant Arsenal won the second half scoring battle.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit from the first half and the game finished 10-4.

Kyle won a well-deserved man of the match award for his performance that included a handful of weaving runs and a full-contact tackle that won the side a penalty.

There’s no doubt if Arsenal had defended as solidly in the second half as they did in the first, the result would have been very different.
