As a South African born, New Zealand bred Londoner, rugby runs through my veins.
I moved into the Royal Arsenal in November 2015 and came across a promotional day a local tag rugby club had organized at the Saturday market and thought it would be a perfect way to meet locals and get back into a team sport, something I hadn’t done for around 10 years.
The casual nature of the club suits my current lifestyle perfectly, if I’m away on the weekend (or had a big Saturday night!) I can skip the Sunday session up at the MOD playing fields Woolwich and catch up with the guys on a Wednesday night at Wellington park for a game, which is a great way to break up the week and a good excuse for a pint afterwards at The Taproom.
One of my personal highlights this year has been our own ‘Six Nations Tournament’ which was held up on Blackheath common. Many club members brought friends and family from across the UK to support and participate. It was a great day overall with a huge turnout. My allocated team, Italy, came a close second behind the favorites of the day England. I also came home with a prize I won through the charity auction held that afternoon, a weekend away in Ayrshire, Scotland.
If you’re reading this and still haven’t decided whether tag rugby is for you, I highly recommend it. You’ll be met by a great community of like-minded individuals from across the UK and the globe, all with a variety of fitness levels and ages… plus you’re guaranteed to have a lot of fun!
Who said fitness needs to be boring?!
